Last fall I hung out with my friend - woodworker, writer, and educator Mario Rodriguez while he installed a wood rack system in the volunteer woodshop that he helps renovating. The shop is part of the Fellowship Community campus in Chestnut Ridge, New York.
Mario’s system of bracketed racks is very simple to build and install, and could conveniently support shelves or woodstock.
I wanted to share with you Mario’s clever design, and also offer a more robust alternative for rack that needs to carry heavier loads.

Mario’s design calls for posts that are screwed to the wall, and floating brackets that are secured to the posts in the height of your choosing. The cantilever brackets are made from thinner stock of dimensional lumber and can be cut rectangular or tapered. A plate screwed over the two bracket’s “wings” add stability and strength.

Note: Mario's brackets are made with the horizontal panel nailed in between the two wings. When building yours you can adhere to this design or change it, to have the panel cap over the wings - as shown in the drawings.

For a more robust design we can replace the simple 2x4 or so post with a “T” post that is made of two boards. The two boards should be connected together with screws or even glued, prior to being screwed to the wall.

Connecting the post to a drywall should be done directly into the studs. And if you install the system over a cinder block wall do use anchors or specialized screws.

Once the system is ready you can lay on the brackets a ¾” thick wide pine boards to be used as shelves or just lay your wood stock directly on them.
